A total of 178 police officers have completed a six-week intensive training on riot control and urban security operations, aimed at strengthening the Rwanda National Police’s (RNP) capacity to manage public unrest and respond to threats in urban environments.
The training, organized in partnership with Qatar’s Internal Security Force, Lekhwiya, took place at the Counter-Terrorism Training Center (CTTC) in Mayange, Bugesera District.
The graduation ceremony, held Wednesday, July 23, was presided over by the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Felix Namuhoranye, who was joined by Lekhwiya’s representative, Lt. Col. Abdallah Ghanim Alghanim.
According to officials, the training focused on two key areas: managing public order and riots, and responding to terrorist threats in city environments, particularly in high-rise buildings. The aim was to enhance the technical skills and coordination of officers, while promoting teamwork and professionalism.
“Technical knowledge in riot control and responding to urban threats is essential for our core mission to ensure public safety,” said IGP Namuhoranye during the ceremony. “I’m proud of the commitment you’ve shown, and I urge you to uphold professionalism and discipline as you apply what you’ve learned.”
He also commended the government of Qatar and Lekhwiya for their continued support in building the Rwandan police’s operational capacity, particularly in the areas of public safety and counterterrorism.
The IGP praised the trainers for their dedication and expertise and encouraged the graduates to use their new skills to better serve their communities.
The course provided officers with training in managing urban security threats, riot suppression, countering armed criminals in rural and urban terrains, marksmanship, and tactical responses to suspects hiding in buildings. It also emphasized ethical conduct, human rights, and effective inter-unit coordination during complex security operations.
The training program is part of the ongoing cooperation between Rwanda and Qatar in the field of internal security and is expected to improve the force’s readiness to deal with evolving security challenges across the country.
