The Liberal Party (PL) on Tuesday joined Rwandans in commemorating the 32nd anniversary of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, pledging to continue fighting genocide denial and ideology.
In a statement issued April 7, as Rwanda marked the annual commemoration, the party said the country’s painful history must never be forgotten and should serve as a foundation for strengthening national unity.
PL President Donatille Mukabalisa said remembrance gives survivors and other Rwandans the strength to move forward and continue rebuilding the nation.
“PL will never stop confronting those who deny or trivialize the Genocide against the Tutsi, as well as those who promote its ideology,” Mukabalisa said. “We call on all Rwandans to remain united, as unity is the cornerstone of building a strong Rwanda.”
She said the commemoration is a responsibility shared by all Rwandans, noting that remembering victims helps restore the dignity they were denied for being Tutsi.
The party also urged Rwandans to honor the bravery of the former RPF Inkotanyi fighters who stopped the genocide and saved many lives.
PL expressed appreciation to President Paul Kagame, who led the forces, and encouraged young people to learn from what it described as their courage and sacrifice during the 100-day genocide that claimed more than 1 million lives.
Mukabalisa said many of the fighters were young people who made extraordinary sacrifices, with some losing their lives to save others.
The party further called on its members and all Rwandans to continue working toward national development goals under Vision 2050.
It reaffirmed its support for national unity and resilience initiatives, including the “Ndi Umunyarwanda” program, and stressed the importance of ensuring that genocide never happens again while promoting good governance, social welfare and sustainable development.
