President Paul Kagame, first lady Jeannette Kagame and senior government officials on Saturday laid wreaths at the Heroes Monument in Kigali as Rwanda marked Heroes Day, a national commemoration honoring individuals who played pivotal roles in the country’s history.
The ceremony took place at Heroes Square in the Remera neighborhood, where leaders, diplomats and other dignitaries gathered to pay tribute to Rwanda’s heroes. After the wreath-laying, participants observed a moment of silence in remembrance of all those recognized for their sacrifice and bravery.
Rwanda observes Heroes Day every year on Feb. 1. The country officially classifies its heroes into three categories: Imanzi, Imena and Ingenzi.
The Imanzi category includes heroes who are no longer alive and is reserved for those who made the ultimate sacrifice for the nation. Among them are Maj. Gen. Fred Gisa Rwigema, a key figure in the liberation struggle that began in 1990, and the Unknown Soldier, who represents all fighters who gave their lives defending the country.
The Imena category honors individuals known for exceptional courage and moral leadership. Those recognized include King Mutara III Rudahigwa; political activist Michel Rwagasana; former Prime Minister Agatha Uwilingiyimana; Félicité Niyitegeka, who saved lives during the 1994 genocide; and students from Nyange Secondary School, remembered for refusing to be divided along ethnic lines.
No individual has yet been officially recognized in the Ingenzi category, though authorities say research is ongoing.
Zimbabwe’s ambassador to Rwanda, Prof. Charity Manyeruke, who serves as dean of the diplomatic corps, laid a wreath on behalf of foreign envoys accredited to Rwanda.
This year’s observance marked the 32nd commemoration of Heroes Day and was held under the theme, “Heroism and Unity of Rwandans: Pillars of Development.”
Officials said the annual event is intended to promote national unity, patriotism and reflection on the values that underpin Rwanda’s continued development and stability.
