The government will close all schools in Kigali and encourage most workers in the capital to work from home when Rwanda hosts the 2025 UCI Road World Championships from Sept. 21 to 28.
The decision, announced Wednesday, comes as the city prepares to welcome hundreds of elite cyclists for the event, which will be held in Africa for the first time. Officials say some roads will be reserved for races at certain hours to ensure the safety of riders, staff, and the public.
“Kigali is proud to host the world’s cycling stars,” the statement read. “We want to make sure the competition runs smoothly and safely.”
The Ministry of Education will work closely with school leaders and parents to manage the week-long closures. Government institutions and private companies able to work remotely are urged to do so, except for essential service providers who must be on site.
Authorities said traffic plans, including which roads will be closed, will be announced early and clearly marked to minimize disruption.
The races will cover 267.5 kilometers with 5,475 meters of climbing, making it one of the toughest courses ever. Rwanda will field 34 riders across men’s, women’s, under-23, and junior categories.
