Rwanda’s Under-16 girls’ national basketball team advanced to the quarterfinals of the Africa Championship in Kigali after finishing atop Group A, despite a 58–46 loss to Tunisia on Monday.
Rwanda started strong, taking the first quarter 13–10, and trailed by just one point at halftime, 26–25. But Tunisia shifted momentum in the second half, edging Rwanda 17–15 in the third quarter and pulling away with a dominant 16–5 finish in the fourth.
Akaliza Husina led Rwanda with 18 points, while Ishimwe Alpha Rebecca and Atete Ndaruhutse Laissa added 13 apiece. Tunisia’s top scorer was Rihem Omri with 14 points, followed by Dorra Masmoudi with 12 and Ayari Ghazali with 10.
All three Group A teams — Rwanda, Tunisia, and Tanzania — finished with one win each. Rwanda advanced in first place on a +7 points differential, while Tunisia qualified second with +5. Tanzania, with –12, was eliminated.
The tournament continues Tuesday, September 9, with the boys’ Group A match between Rwanda and Côte d’Ivoire at 6:30 p.m. at Petit Stade in Remera. Rwanda currently sits third in that group after a loss to Angola and a win over Sierra Leone.
