The Rwanda National Police (RNP) is set to launch childcare centers and dedicated girls’ rooms at its facilities across the country, a move aimed at supporting female police officers and improving their working environment.
Police spokesperson ACP Boniface Rutikanga said the initiative, which will begin soon, is part of the force’s commitment to gender equality and professional development.
“For a woman or girl to perform well in the police force, she needs basic support that ensures her safety, confidence and peace of mind,” Rutikanga told reporters.
The program will initially roll out at the National Police Headquarters in Kacyiru, Gasabo District, and in selected police schools. Rutikanga confirmed that all necessary approvals have been secured and implementation is expected to begin shortly.
“We expect to evaluate the program’s progress within the next year,” he said.
In addition to the childcare centers, all new police facilities will be required to include a special room for girls to support their reproductive health needs.
“Every new building where female officers work will include this room as a standard facility,” Rutikanga added.
The decision follows repeated requests from female officers during various consultative meetings. Police leadership reviewed the feedback and concluded the requests were valid and necessary.
“With the growing number of female officers in the force, the need for childcare centers and girls’ rooms has become more evident,” Rutikanga said.
In 2024, Inspector General of Police CG Felix Namuhoranye reaffirmed Rwanda’s goal of increasing the number of capable women in the police force. At the time, female officers made up nearly 24% of the force, with a national target of reaching 30%.
Officials say the new initiative will help build a more inclusive, professional police service and improve the ability of female officers to carry out their duties effectively.
