The Eastern Africa Standby Force (EASF) has urged African youth to stay vigilant against cybercrime, warning that criminals are increasingly using digital platforms to lure young people with promises of jobs, money, and opportunities abroad.
The call was made on September 8, 2025, during the launch of a training program in Kigali on cybersecurity and the prevention of online crimes, including terrorism. The workshop brought together security officers, law enforcement agencies, policymakers, IT specialists, and university students.
David Kanamugire, Director General of Rwanda’s National Cybersecurity Authority, stressed that while technology is essential for development, it is also being misused. “Today’s world relies heavily on technology. To benefit from it, especially for employment, young people must learn to use it responsibly and avoid traps,” he said.
EASF Technology Director, Maj. Faustin Ngaboyimanzi, said the training is meant to strengthen awareness of cyber threats and equip participants with skills to prevent them. “Criminals often manipulate or coerce youth into illegal activities. Knowledge is the first line of defense,” he noted.
Participants agreed the lessons were timely. Kayitesi, a student, said youth are highly vulnerable because of their eagerness to succeed. “We often fall for scams like fake job offers. My advice is that young people should be cautious and seek advice before accepting any opportunity,” she said.
Another participant, Uwayo Rwema Emmanuel, emphasized the value of verified information. “Having accurate facts protects you from believing everything you see online,” he said.
Organizers reminded youth across Africa that they remain the main target of online scammers and urged them to remain alert, safeguard their personal data, and think critically before responding to offers on digital platforms.
